Small bowls, carved with crest and animal figures, were used as personal food dishes during potlatch ceremonies that celebrated significant family events. Don ·Lelooska·Smith, a carver of Cherokee and European ancestry, was granted carving rights by his adopted tribe, the Kwakwaka'wakw (Kwakitul) of British Colombia. Through the 1960s and 1970s, he continued the traditions of the Northwest through his style of carving and costumes performances, bringing much attention from both native and non-Native audiences alike.
