Rattles are a traditional art form for many of the tribes of the Northwest Coast. They were commonly used by shamans in ceremonies and also were carried by clan leaders as prestige items.

Distinctive in shape, the woven wide-brimmed hats of the Haida people provided protection from sun and rain. The hats were traded to neighboring tribes that, like the Haida, painted symbols of importance upon them. Abalone shell pendants, in some cases, were also attached to the hats. A puffin bird, frog and orca are imaged on this particular hat.
