A dragon robe, the most precious treasure at Nanjing Yunjin Museum, went on display to visitors on July 8 at Deji Plaza in Nanjing, Jiangsu province.

The dragon robe is made of yunjin brocade and was found in the coffin of Emperor Wanli (1563-1620) of the Ming dynasty. It worked as a riding costume for Emperor Wanli. Celestial crane and lucid ganoderma, both symbols of fortune, luck and blessing, are knitted into the robe. The Chinese character, “壽” (pronounced as “shou” and meaning longevity) appears on the robe 1045 times and contains 4,000 meters of gold thread.

The robe was due to appear in an exhibition in Italy as part of Expo Milano 2015 Nanjing Week but remained in Nanjing in case of a transportation mishap.

Yunjin brocade is an expensive fabric which can is slow to produce (one inch per day) and gets its name, cloud brocade, owing to its resemblance to bright, colorful clouds.
