Paintings of the Ming Dynasty
   (A.D. 1368 --- A.D.1644)
  In its early days of the Ming Dynasty, the painting art followed the Song Dynasty tradition of the “Academy Style”. The court painting and “Zhe School” painting dominate the artistic field. Then, “Wumen School” dominated the whole field for about 100 years. During the later period of the Ming Dynasty, all kinds of artistic thoughts became active, and various Schools of different styles came into being. Among those Schools, the Songjiang School led and influenced the painting field of the Qing Dynasty.

The Picture Scroll of “Clustering Chinese Plum Flowers”by Chen Lu

   Chen Lu (the date of birth and death remains unknown), styled himself Xianzhang and was born in Huiji (Shaoxing in Zhejiang province). He was good at painting plum flowers, pine trees, bamboos and orchids with a style of elegancy. As for his paintings of black plum flower, he enjoyed equal fame with Wangqian who was renowned for plum flower paintings in early Ming Dynasty, and even surpassed Wang in artistic achievements.
